ACFTA Panel Discussion – Towards a Resilient Future with the ASEAN Canada FTA: Opportunities and Risks

Executive Director Jukhee Hong was invited to be a panel speaker at the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) panel discussion titled “Towards a Resilient Future with the ASEAN Canada FTA: Opportunities and Risks,” moderated by Barrett Bingley, Asia Regional Director of Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The discussion centered on the strategic economic opportunities presented by the ACFTA, with Jukhee highlighting the critical role of the private sector in ensuring the agreement delivers tangible value for ASEAN businesses. 

Key topics included the removal of barriers such as data localisation requirements and customs procedures, as well as the impact of non-trade provisions—like environmental and labor standards—on ASEAN businesses. Looking ahead, the panel adopted a future-focused approach, debating the essential elements needed to keep the ACFTA relevant and effective for the next 5 to 10 years. The discussion underscored the importance of adaptability, ongoing stakeholder engagement, and a balanced approach to both trade and non-trade issues to ensure the agreement continues to support resilient and inclusive economic growth in the region.

Other panel speakers who joined Jukhee on stage were Jonathan Jackson, Asia-Pacific Senior Director of Blackberry; Professor Dr. Sufian Jusoh, Principal Fellow of the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies,UKM; and Vina Nadjibulla, Research & Strategy, Vice President of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
